To celebrate the 15th national apprentice week, we spoke to two of our current apprentices, to find out why they would recommend being an apprentice.  Nathan only started his journey in September 2021 and Narine is now a higher-level apprentice studying to level 7.  Find out why Nathan and Narine, think apprentices can help to #buildthefuture

Nathan Miller – IT apprentice

  1. Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

I chose an apprenticeship so that I could continue developing my knowledge in IT and gain valuable work experience while doing so.

  1. What is your role within AIS and what do you love most about it?

I work as an IT apprentice for AIS, my favorite part of the role is the satisfaction that you gain after fixing a problem, it helps with my confidence and improves my troubleshooting and practical skills.

  1. How has your apprenticeship helped your career – what are your future career aspirations?

Although it’s a bit early to tell, I have a huge passion for IT and this apprenticeship has provided me with the tools and knowledge necessary to gain hands-on experience in the workplace. This experience is often desired by employers which will hopefully help when I continue to develop my career in the industry.

  1. What would you say to anyone who is unsure about an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is perfect for anyone who wants to acquire work-specific skills with the benefit of an income. I believe you will gain the most from an apprenticeship in which you share a genuine interest in the role, this will help with motivation and most importantly enjoying what you do.

Narine Taranyan - assistant management accountant

  1. Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

I was already employed by AIS, and after passing my probation, the company offered me to do a Level 7 CIMA apprenticeship. I was happy to be given this chance which surely helps my professional development. And also, I love studying!

  1. What is your role within AIS and what do you love most about it?

I work as Assistant Management Accountant. I love that the role is directly linked to my studies, and I can see the applications in our group companies. There are many areas for me to explore and learn. Also, I am directly working with six group companies in five different countries, which makes it very exciting.

  1. How has your apprenticeship helped your career – what are your future career aspirations?

I had a promotion 10 months ago after passing the first level of CIMA. My next step is to grow as a professional within my current role and become a chartered accountant.

  1. What would you say to anyone who is unsure about an apprenticeship?

Not all countries have the apprenticeship scheme, so if you are given the opportunity, you should take it. This is a great way to learn the theory, and gain practical experience at the same time. And it is perfect for people who are just starting their career, or for people like me who are seeking a career change.

It is not always easy to work and study at the same time, but here at AIS I have the support of the company and our finance team, which turns the process into a great and unique experience!

We are currently recruiting for a number of apprentices, if you'd like to join us, take a look at our careers page.
