Cable protection repair system: Protecting offshore wind infrastructure

Engineered specifically for offshore wind power applications, tackling the unique challenges associated with CPS J-tube connection points.

In offshore wind farms, subsea cables are critical for transmitting power from turbines to onshore grids. These cables, particularly at the J-tube connections where they transition from the seabed to the Offshore substations (OSS), face significant risks. Dynamic movements, abrasion, and harsh environmental conditions make these points particularly vulnerable. To address these challenges, we have developed a cable protection repair system (CPRS). This specialised solution is designed to repair and enhance the integrity of J-tube-connected cables.

A targeted solution for offshore wind

The CPRS is engineered specifically for offshore wind power applications. It tackles the unique challenges associated with J-tube connection points. These areas often experience high mechanical stresses caused by wave action and current forces. If an existing (competitors) cable protection system (CPS) has structurally failed or slipped from within the J-tube, the cable becomes exposed. This exposure leaves it vulnerable to over-bending and fatigue in the aggressive subsea environment. Over time, this can lead to further damage at the failure site. The CPRS mitigates these vulnerabilities, restoring protection and ensuring the cable's long-term reliability and performance.

Key features and advantages
  • Tailored design for J-tube connections: The CPRS is optimised for the specific geometry and requirements of J-tube applications. With a split design consisting of two half shells, it seamlessly integrates over the bell mouth and covers the broken section of the CPS, to provide comprehensive repair and reinforcement.
  • Lightweight, quick and easy installation: Designed for in situ diver assisted deployment, the CPRS can be installed directly over damaged cables without removing the damaged CPS components. Its modular design ensures compatibility with various cable diameters and configurations.
  • Enhanced durability: Made from API 17L certified polymer material, the CPRS offers exceptional resistance to abrasion and fatigue, providing long-term reliability in dynamic environments. Its robust design ensures the cable remains protected even under significant mechanical loads.
  • Cost and time efficiency: By eliminating the need for cable replacement or extended turbine shutdowns, the CPRS significantly reduces repair costs and operational disruptions. Offshore wind operators can restore functionality with zero/minimal downtime, ensuring consistent power generation.
  • Sustainability: Repairing cables in situ aligns with the offshore wind industry’s commitment to sustainability, reducing waste and the environmental impact associated with cable replacement operations.
Supporting offshore wind growth

As offshore wind farms expand, maintaining the integrity of subsea cable connections is increasingly important. The CPRS offers a field-proven retrofit solution that can repair CPS components, when originally supplied by another manufacturer. By ensuring turbines operate efficiently and reliably, the CPRS protects operator investments and supports the growing global demand for renewable energy.
