Our customer, a major automotive OEM required a mica-free thermal barrier material to withstand the potential thermal runaway of >100 Ah prismatic battery cells. Not only this, but due to the complexity of the battery pack, different levels of protection were required for different areas.
Thanks to our expertise in passive fire protection, we provided a combination of our ContraFlame® S1- and S2- Series. These advanced thermal barrier materials shield battery enclosures in an extreme event.

Our ContraFlame® S1-Series has a thickness of under 1.0 mm and weighs up to 70% less than alternative options, an important trait in the automotive industry.
Solution
The complexity of our customers’ battery pack meant two solutions were required for different levels of protection. To meet these demands, we provided a combination of our ContraFlame® S1- and S2- Series, to safeguard different areas within the pack.
Both products feature a thin profile, allowing for easy integration without adding unnecessary bulk. However, where enhanced protection and superior insulation are critical, our S2- Series is the ideal choice, offering robust thermal shielding, ensuring optimal performance and safety for high-risk components.
Results
Our customer received a lightweight solution that ticked all the important boxes. Not only are our S1 and S2- Series products mica-free, but they also offer exceptional temperature resistance of up to 1300 °C, ensuring reliable performance in high-temperature environments. These solutions are particularly well-suited for complex geometries, as we tailor them to acute angles and challenging design specifications, providing seamless protection even in the most intricate areas.
